Biography
Kerry D. Staton is one of the most highly respected medical malpractice attorneys in Maryland, with a legal career defined by courtroom excellence and service to the legal community. A Fellow of both the American College of Trial Lawyers and the International Society of Barristers, Mr. Staton is recognized among the top 1% of attorneys in the state. In 2025, he was named “Lawyer of the Year” for Baltimore Medical Malpractice Law – Plaintiffs by Best Lawyers®, an honor he has earned multiple times, including in 2013, 2018, and 2022.
His personal connection to medical negligence—stemming from his mother’s tragic outcome following negligent surgical care—galvanized his commitment to patient advocacy and justice. This experience continues to drive his focus on representing victims of medical malpractice with empathy, legal precision, and a deep sense of responsibility.
Beyond his courtroom success, Mr. Staton has held numerous leadership and advisory positions within Maryland’s legal system. Appointed by the Chief Judge of the Court of Appeals of Maryland, he has served as a Commissioner on the Attorney Grievance Commission, Chair of its Review Board, and in multiple peer-review capacities. He has long supported the mission of equal access to justice, including service on the boards of the Maryland Volunteer Lawyers Service, the Howard Community College Foundation, and Marian House. A former Board of Governors member of the Maryland Association for Justice, Mr. Staton has also been active in national organizations, including the American Association for Justice, where he served as State Delegate and Minority Caucus representative. He is a Fellow of the Maryland Bar Foundation, the Reginald Heber Smith Law Fellowship, and the Fourth Circuit Judicial Conference.
A graduate of Oberlin College and the University of Maryland School of Law (J.D., 1980), Mr. Staton frequently lectures on law, medicine, and tort reform—sharing his expertise with institutions such as Johns Hopkins Hospital, the University of Maryland School of Law, and the Maryland legislature. He lives in Clarksville, Maryland, with his wife, who is also an attorney. Together, they have raised two children.
